A day to Celebrate - Our Quilt In 2018

 Saturday 13th October was a day of true celebration of everything quilting.  Our Committee and Members put on a wonderful event where we hosted approx 100 guests, who each share a love of Patchwork and Quilting.

The Kilmore Memorial Hall looked beautiful upon entry, with all of the quilts from our members who exhibited at Showcase displaying their quilts.

Among the ohhss and ahhs, people were quickly lining up for our famous morning/afternoon tea table, full of scrumptious home-made treats.   Some even brought along antique tea-cups to drink from.

The urns were kept boiling and being refilled all day long as many, many cups of tea and coffee were consumed.  

 

As well as our group trade table, we had stalls from three shops.  Lots of opportunity to spend up or get that extra piece which will be perfect for the current project.

Our first speaker of the day was Sugy Kim, winner of the 2017 Best of Australia Quilt.  Sugy has a fascinating story of how she started quilting as an expat, living in Japan.  

People were enthralled as she explained her strict quilting lessons, followed by the demands she places upon herself to make the quilts she likes and is happy with.  The whole room gasped when she mentioned that if something is 3mm out, she will undo it and redo until it is perfect.  Totatlly awe-inspiring.

All of her quilts are drawn on paper first, coloured in to get the right balance and then made.  Piece by piece.  Slowly, slowly, until it is right.

Truly spectacular quilts.  Time, patience and a love colour to produce such magnificent pieces.  

Our second speaker was Shelley Kelly.  Shelley also shared her love of all things quilting, patchwork and embroidery.  Her work is very diverse, which sees her trying many different styles.

 

Among her love of embroidery, she also love foundation piecing.   To share her love of textiles, Shelley now runs the "Skelleywags" sewing school.

September Gatherings

What a wonderful month we've had - so many very prolific members.  Our Show'n'tell this month is fantastic.  

We start this month with a stunning applique panel, oops, it's sideways, but you can still see how amazing it is.....

B, has returned with his Egyptian Mythology panel, which has had more added to it since he last showed it back in June

C has been working away on another border of her "Rotherfield's Greys" quilt.  First you make lots of little stars which are then appliqued onto background squares.

For something a little different, here is the most delicate tea cup and saucer - certainly one for admiring...

On the other end of the scale, some lovely chunky variegated knitting, sure to keep it's owner lovely and warm.

Sometimes simplicity is the best - look at those lovely even stitches in this sashiko piece.  Ahhhh....

We have two very diverse but oh so pretty quilt tops in progress, first the four patch diamonds, followed by hand-pieced flowers.  The colours these two ladies have chosen are simply gorgeous.

This photo has been blown up quite large so that you can see the embroidered wreath.  Perfect stitching.

No gathering is complete without Hexagons!  It seems they just like to be where-ever we are! :)  It really doesn't matter what fabrics you make them from, they just look good and bring a lovely feeling of nostalgia with them.

We are excited to see what the hexagon medallion below is going to have around it.  

And, not to be out-done, hexagon shapes can also be "tumbling" or "baby" blocks.  Simply take 3 diamond shapes and 3 shades of colour for a wonderful 3-D effect.

Applique within Kilmore Quilters never fails to please.  From the farmyard to a cheeky cocky, we couldn't help but smile when we saw these two quilts...

Our newest member, Ce, is getting a head start on Christmas!  Very cute applique of Santa, reindeer and a penguin!

To finish off, here is the show'n'tell of completed quilts...  Very diverse and all so perfect.

From memory, these circles of oceans is heading O/S to live with the makers grandson so that he has "hugs from Grandma" while living far away, also made by Ce.

The snowball and 9-patch bears and the two colour quilt were both started at the KQ Retreat, back in 

May.  

The Lone Star quilt and the twirling (Windmills of My Mind) have both been made by the same person.  Diversity is the name of the game!
