May 10-10 Super Saturday

Saturday 4th May saw Kilmore Quilters start their sewing extravaganza month!  Beginning with a 10-10 Super Saturday sewing session and soon to be followed by our regular monthly gatherings and the annual retreat.  As per previous months, the show'n'tell once again lived up to expectations.

Aboriginal prints are often full of amazing patterns and this quilt used a large patterned piece of fabric for the centre, with the same fabric to make 'one block wonder' hexagons for the border applique.  

 

W, completed this quilt top on the day - it is huge!  Stunning with pretty pinks and purples.  Pattern is by Katrina Hadjimichael.

The primary colours of this centre panel by H are for the same quilt pattern as above.  Both versions look fantastic.  The great thing about a few people making the same pattern is the variety of colour choices and how completely different it can look.

Here, the one of the J's is using the Pele Mele pattern from our class back in March and is adding some of her own hand-drawn designs onto the clamshells.  Pele Mele is a great pattern to simply experiment with what you like as there are no rules or limitations to what you can do.

When W completed her purple quilt above, she pulled out her long term hand-sewing project - "A Star A Day" pattern.  After making a star a day, it is assembled into panels before being assembled into a complete top.  If you scroll through back posts on this blog, you can see how it has progressed.  We are all awaiting the final completion of this quilt top with anticipation!

At the March 10-10 Super Saturday, A had brought along her foxes as a large pile of pre-cut pieces with the pattern to assemble them - here they are - ready to go to their new home.  They are so cute and maybe a little bit cheeky.  (Pattern by Elizabeth Hartmann)

 

To finish off, one of the J's made this super cute puppy for a baby to come.  So cute, we all wanted one!

April Gatherings

Oh there's so many projects to make!  And even more to want to make...........  April was certainly following hot on the heels of previous months with lots of show'n'tell and progress on many projects...

Starting with English Paper Piecing on La Pascaligia...

And then, W, showed us another of her Brimfield blocks...

H, is working away on this magnificent applique medallion.  There are some very quirky birds on this piece.  Can't wait to see what comes next!

Then there was a parade of elephants.  Hand applique with eyes and tails to be added for a great grandchild to come..

And, some very cute printed ones are shown to great advantage in this quilt...

In March, Kilmore Quilters was lucky enough to have Veronique from Wattlebird Designs come and spend a day with us, demonstrating her Pele Mele Quilt.  J has been quite prolific with hers and says that they are very addictive to make...

Hand piecing this month included some lovely delicate hexagons and L, is hand-piecing squares which she says are from the oldest part of her stash. 

 


Shadow Box quilts are a fantastic way to show off big prints and this one from Asian inspired fabrics is no exception

 

Letting the fabric do the work, there is terrific shading in this ombre quilt.  This J has told us she is working on our challenge of completing 10 UFOs this year and this is one of them.

 J's second UFO to finish are these birdhouses.  A very small quilt, with precision detail.  I put the reel of thread on top so that you can get an idea of the tiny scale of the blocks.

February Super Saturday

Even though our monthly day and night gatherings were full of show'n'tell, our first Super Saturday 10am - 10pm sewing session of the year was also full of oohhhs and aaahhhs....

Those little appliques finish about 2.5in - they are tiny and so perfectly made. 

The flower and trees are another border of that same quilt.  The quilt is huge with many borders surrounding a central medallion.

One of the A's in our group had come prepared for a day of piecing with everything pre-cut to sit and sew up some very cheeky foxes.

Hand quilting is in progress on these gorgeous petals with their green sashing and purple star cornerstones.

One of the J's also came with her quilt pre-cut and partially assembled blocks so that she too, could sew up a storm.

Not quite enough of each fabric, this quilt is perfect for a horse lover, given she had to "come up with a plan" when her original one didn't quite work out.

To finish off, here is M's mariners compass medallion, started in the class with Shelley Kelley last year.

A New Year - February 2019!

Despite the extremely hot weather, our group members were not deterred from their crafts!  This month there is an huge amount of show'n'tell.  Not many words - but lots and lots of eye candy!  Enjoy scrolling through these beautiful pictures.

Getting prepared for winter, this is the first piece of a mid-thigh length jacket.  Knitting in this heat has to be admired!

Next up is some lovely, funky modern applique.

I believe these brightly coloured blocks are from a block of the month, where you receive the stitchery and instructions for the 'sun rays'.  This is a very pretty quilt.

Another, very pretty quilt is this one with the orange flowers. 

 A trip around the world block.  This is one of many and we have been seeing them in progress over the past few months.

A 'rose window' applique.

Who doesn't love a curved log cabin?  The piecing in this is fantastic as is the colour play.

Now we move onto Scrappy Quilts, starting with this post and rail variation

to be followed by hexagons.  If you think back some 12 months or so ago, this box was very, very full of hexagons.  Slowly, but surely they are being pieced into 'flowers' and put into a top.

 


Here is a detail picture of K's srappy quilt.  She takes all our strips and strings that we would normally discard and turns them into fantastic quilts for charity.

The full quilt is a riot of log cabin blocks with wonky stars thrown in for good measure.
