October Gatherings

October was certainly a busy month, no wonder it has come and gone so quickly!

Apart from our Quilt In we were profiled in a booklet all about Kilmore.  A number of community groups were chosen to host the local MP, be interviewed by her and then have some photos taken.  It was on the 6th Oct, that a few of us went to the launch of this booklet.  We had a lovely morning tea, watched a short presentation and enjoyed each other's company as well as that of the other community groups.

The article in this book is a good representation of what we are about.  It is indeed an honour to be part of the fabric of Kilmore.

The very stormy weather certainly put a huge damper on our night gathering, but the day gathering was well attended and once again, the Show'n'Tell was wonderful.

English Paper Piecing and Fussy Cutting seem to be the "flavour of the month" at the moment, as the pics below will show.....

 

 




W and S were both showing us how beautiful hand applique and hand embroidery can be.

Scrappy Quilting, ie:  using your scraps in a controlled manner, with a common element in each block can make for some stunning quilts.  P is making stars by hand and K was trimming up some blocks for another charity quilt.

     

Then, S was using up her scraps for her hexagon quilt.  You may remember a couple of months ago when we posted a much smaller hexagon piece with a photo of the box of prepared hexies - the quilt top is growing while the box is emptying!

 And, on the right, J is working on the embroidered piece.  Such perfect, even stitches. 

After such a busy October, we hope to see many of you at our November Gatherings and at the 10-10 Super Saturday Sew-In on Sat 17th Nov.

Super Saturday

We came together,

We talked,

We laughed,

We shared.

Only a community of like minded people can understand the level of friendship, caring and support we have for each other.

Quilt projects were worked on, machine problems sorted, tools were shared.

While there are no photos, it was a perfect day with beautiful people.

February Super Saturday

 The "scraps" were out in force yesterday, at the first 10-10 Super Sewing Session for 2018.  This blog writer is always left feeling very inspired after seeing what others can do with little bits of fabric - have a scroll through the pics and enjoy...

Starting with this Dresden plate beauty.  Set on a soft pink background, the plates were made out of many different types of fabrics and we are looking forward to seeing it again once the planned borders are added.  She's kept us guessing on that one!

J, who is one of our newest members, came along with her first completed quilt, which she trimmed up and received a lesson in binding....  It was fantastic to share in her excitement of a completed quilt.

As I was wandering around taking photos, I thought I spied a pretty piece of fabric, nope, it was a happy, smiley mug, which looked very comfortable among the yarn and fabric.

Then, it was onto hexagon heaven... starting with a nice, neat tub of ready made hexies, I have shown first, the back of the quilt - look at how those seams have been pressed - ooohhh laa laa -   

So that plastic tub of hexies, becomes this quilt in the pic below...  365 hexagons, 1 per day for 1 year.

In another bit of hexagon madness, this "medallion style" hexagon quilt was pulled out for some show'n'tell....

The wonderful colours in the next hexagon quilt are made from left overs of fabrics this lady has from all of her previous projects.  Complete hexagons are all made and now she's going around the outside edges with the leftover hexies.  

As you can see, we almost filled up the room in the hall, but I know if we'd had more people turn up, we would have made space.  There were approx 30 sewers on the day.  Unfortunately, I didn't get any pics of the embroidery and applique that the visiting ladies were working on.  We had visitors from Frankston, Lang Lang and Ferntree Gully, which are all 2 or more hours away, as well as the local ladies.

A bit more fussy cutting for paper piecing...

And, of course the day is not complete unless there are some "Dear Jane" blocks and sawtooth stars being made.  

One of the J's is making a quilt for a friend.  What looked like a simple pattern has turned out to be quite a bit of work, but now that the first block has been conquered, she's more confident of completing the rest of the blocks.  It sure is pretty..

R's quilt has had some fabric go missing.  This is the last of 3 quilts she brought along with her to complete the tops.  2 were completely finished and this one got told off for not keeping it's pieces together

And, one of the A's also brought along 3 quilts to add the borders to and complete the tops.  Yesterday was her first sewing session in quite a while and she went home very pleased with her progress.

 The pink quilt above and the bright coloured quilt below are from classes held at Kilmore Quilters.

Sewing at Amitie Textiles

At 8am last Saturday morning, members of KQ boarded a bus and we set off for a 2.5hr drive to the coastal town of Torquay - destination Amitie Textiles.

"Herbie" the bus and his driver got us there and returned home all safe and sound.

Walking in the door of Amitie caused some gasps of wonder at the wonderful open space and beautiful works on display.

Looking around the walls, looking around the space, there was eye-candy everywhere.  So much inspiration. 

Then, after browsing, shopping and coffee, some of us settled down to do some sewing.

Some brought projects which needed more fabric,

Others worked on what they had...

Coffee, friends, a nice space and sewing really is the best way to spend a day.

 And, there's always one with magnificent show'n'tell!  A gorgeous quilt.

On the way home, B spied these silos out of the bus window - stunning.

A purely blissful way to start the year with our group.  2018 promises to be wonderful. :)
